Neurological complications of gastrointestinal disorders

Abstract

This article presents a short review of the literature concerning neurological complications of gastrointestinal
disorders. These disorders include the following: inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s
disease), celiac disease, H. Pylori infection, hepatitis C, Wilson’s disease, hepatic failure-liver transplantation,
gastroenteritis. The most frequent neurological complications are peripheral neuropathy, cerebellar
dysfunction, thromboembolism. The exact pathophysiologic mechanism remains unclear. In most cases
neurological manifestations precede the onset of neurological symptoms.
